The population of Westray and Papa Westray united in all ammount at present
to 2128, Males 1013 Females 1115.
The population of these Islands in 1821 ammounted to 1947.
and in 1831 ammounted to 2032.
With respect to Emigration, I may assent that no Family has Emigrated from
the parish of Westray for these twenty years past, to any Colony or Foreign
Country. A few young men not exceeding half a dozen do annually go to the
N West from this parish to the employ of the Hudson Bay Company, and about
the same number do yearly go south from Westray as sailors for the Coasting
or Foreign Trade.

was written by the Enumerator:
Swartoback is the last House of the District next to the 3 District of the
East Parish but the houses I have set down afterward are those that I visited
on my way round the west side of the Parish and which are contained within
the bounds of my District. Kirkhouse should have been the final, and
Swartoback the last house here.

The small difference in the number of Houses in these Schedules from those
originally given in, arises chiefly from solitary individuals who keep House
by themselves and who labour from place to place for their subsistence
sometimes sleeping at their own House but more frequently absent from it.
